How Braces Can Impact Your Eating Habits And How To Adjust

Getting braces is an exciting step toward a healthier, straighter smile. However, it can take a little time to adjust to eating with brackets and wires. During the first few days after an adjustment, your teeth may feel tender, making certain foods less comfortable to chew. Fortunately, a few simple changes can help make mealtimes easier while protecting your orthodontic treatment.

Start With Softer Foods

When your braces are first placed or adjusted, choose foods that are gentle on your teeth. Softer options can help reduce discomfort while still providing the nutrients your body needs.

Some good choices include:

  • Yogurt
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Oatmeal
  • Smoothies
  • Pasta
  • Soup
  • Soft fruits like bananas

As your mouth becomes more comfortable, you can gradually add more foods back into your routine.

Be Mindful Of Foods That Can Damage Braces

Certain foods are more likely to bend wires, loosen brackets, or become stuck in your braces. Avoiding these foods can help prevent unexpected orthodontic repairs and keep your treatment on schedule.

Try to avoid:

  • Hard candies
  • Popcorn
  • Whole nuts
  • Sticky caramel or chewy candy
  • Ice
  • Tough, chewy foods

When eating foods like apples or carrots, cutting them into small, bite-sized pieces instead of biting into them directly can help protect your braces.

Take Your Time While Eating

Chewing more slowly may feel different at first, but it can make meals much more comfortable. Taking smaller bites also places less pressure on your braces and helps reduce the chance of damaging them.

After meals, brushing carefully around your brackets helps remove trapped food and keeps your teeth and gums healthy throughout treatment.

Adjusting Gets Easier With Time

Most people find that eating with braces becomes much easier after the initial adjustment period. As you become familiar with which foods work best, everyday meals begin to feel more natural again.

Enjoy A Healthy Smile Throughout Treatment

Braces may temporarily change the way you eat, but those adjustments are well worth the long- term benefits. Choosing softer foods, avoiding items that can damage your braces, and maintaining good oral hygiene can help keep your treatment progressing smoothly. Schedule your regular orthodontic appointments to help ensure your smile continues moving in the right direction.
